Windows Live Writer

imageMy search for Software Tools that could help me blog better, brought me to this neat little piece of software from Microsoft. I had certainly not expected a blogging tool from Microsoft. It also turns out that Windows Live Writer is a free software. It is part of the Windows Live.

My first hunch was that it might only be compatible with Microsoft's own blogging service, Windows Live Spaces. But, it really turns out that Windows Live Writer is also compatible with SharePoint, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress, Community Server, and many other services.

Anyone with basic usage knowledge of a word processing software can quickly start using the software. The interface resembles a word processing software with basic formatting functions.

Managing Blogs

To begin with, the first thing to do would be managing the blog account by associating it with the writer. This is quiet easy. Just choose Add Weblog Account from the Weblog menu and a wizard appears. If you are going to manage a Windows Live Spaces or Sharepoint weblog, the options are available in the main screen. But when it comes to other Blogs such as Blogger, WordPress or other services, simply choose Another weblog service from the screen and in the next screen provide the URL of the blog, the username and password. Windows Live Writer will automatically try to detect the type of blog and setup the parameters.

Views & Usage

All the basic formatting options are available in neatly organized menus and toolbars. Inserting images are quiet simple. Just paste them into the window. Windows Live Writer will automatically upload the picture to the blog if your blog service supports it. Simply clicking an image brings up several options on the sidebar to layout and optimize the image.
